Our Coffee

What does our coffee taste like?

Zukuka Bora sources coffee from farmers across Mt. Elgon, and processes it in different ways. This means that there’s a flavour profile out there for everyone! Have a look at our different sites and processes to see what might take your fancy!

Our Sites

Namatyo Falls

Colloquially known as simply ‘lower,’ our Namatyo Falls site is located in the foothills of Mt. Wanale. This is where it all began - we cut our teeth here amongst the banana trees and although we’ve expanded and grown from our days of hand cranked pulping machines, for us, this is home!

Altitude: 1450-1650 masl

Process: Honey

Tasting notes: Light citrus, cherry

Budwale

Located half-way up Mt. Wanale, our farmers in Budwale are about as remote and hard to reach as possible. The road to Budwale is impassable in rainy conditions (i.e. almost all the time). Despite these challenges we receive such consistently good coffee from our network of committed farmers who carry their coffee to the nearest reachable trading centre.

Altitude: 1750-1950 masl

Process: Washed

Tasting notes: Dark chocolate, biscuit

Wanale

Our largest washing site is located on top of Mt. Wanale, and many a late night has been spent here processing fabulous coffee! It is so beautiful here, and the coffee from this region is slow-maturing, delicate and very special.

Altitude: 1750-1950 masl

Process: Honey, Washed

Tasting notes: Tangerine, caramel

Bukhanakwa

Bukhanakwa is situated on the far side of Mt. Wanale, with breath-taking views over Mt. Elgon and the surrounding foothills. It’s therefore not surprising that Bukhanakwa coffee has a breath-taking taste! Isolated an hour’s walk through the forest, we go out of our way to buy their coffee. Once you’ve had a cup, it will be obvious why!

Altitude: 1900-2100 masl

Process: Washed/Natural

Tasting notes: Beautiful acidity, orange, summer fruits

Bududa.jpg

Bududa

Farmers in Bududa have to combat severe landslides and some of the worst roads in Uganda. It’s also one of the most fertile parts of Uganda. Everything grows and prospers here - coffee, bananas, beans, you name it. It is also home to some of Uganda’s most special coffee - you will not be disappointed.

Altitude: 1550-1750 masl

Process: Natural

Tasting notes: Peach, cane sugar, nectarine

Sipi FALLS

Sipi is most well known for its spectacular waterfalls and amazing panoramic views, but that's not all that's special about Sipi. Due to its altitude it has cooler temperatures and gets more rainfall than the surrounding plains and these factors combined with the unique type of arabica grown here give it a truly exceptional richness and flavour. It's our most popular export coffee for a reason!

Altitude: 1900-2100 masl

Process: Washed/Natural

Tasting notes: Butterscotch, caramel

How we process our coffee

Washed

Washed coffee might be our standard; but there’s nothing standard about it’s taste. A bright and refreshing cup, there’s plenty here to enjoy.

Honey

With more than a passing resemblance to Sugar Puffs, our honey-process coffee adds a little extra sweetness and complexity to the taste, which can make a ordinary coffee an extraordinary one.

Natural

The oldest form of coffee processing comes from Ethiopia, where the coffee bean dries inside the cherry. This leads to a particularly fruity cup, and is a firm favourite here at Zukuka Bora.
